The Do
Do Dress Modestly: Always wear a sarong and sash (selendang) when entering a temple. These are often available for rent at major temples, but we recommend carrying your own.
Do Behave Respectfully: Speak softly, move calmly, and avoid loud or disruptive behavior. Temples are active places of worship.
Do Follow Guidance: If a temple ceremony is taking place, observe from a respectful distance unless invited to participate.
Do Sit in a Respectful Posture: If you sit down, avoid pointing your feet towards shrines or people. Cross your legs or tuck them to the side
Do Ask for Permission: Always ask before taking photographs of worshippers or during private ceremonies.
The Dont’s
Don’t Enter if Menstruating: As a sign of respect, women who are menstruating are traditionally not permitted to enter temple grounds. This is based on sacred cultural beliefs.
Don’t Stand Above Holy Offerings or People: Be mindful of your step. Never step over a canang sari (a small palm-leaf offering) on the ground. Walk around it.
Don’t Climb on Sacred Structures: Treat all shrines (meru), statues, and altars with reverence. Do not climb on them for photos.
Don’t Point Your Feet: The feet are considered the lowest and least pure part of the body. Avoid pointing the soles of your feet at altars or people.
Don’t Touch Holy Water or Offerings: Unless you are actively participating in a blessing led by a priest, do not touch any ceremonial items.
